Details
Purpose: The purpose of this symposium is to present and discuss the need for identification of time- and context-dependent determinants and their associations with physical activity (PA) in order to change behavior more effectively. Furthermore, the feasibility of using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in older adults and just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) in patients with chronic conditions will be presented and discussed.
Rationale: Targeting the ‘right’ determinants at the ‘right’ time, taking into account the possible time- and context-dependent variations of determinants in interventions, might increase PA levels more effectively. Identification of such variations is possible with EMA and stimulating individuals to be active at the right time in the right context can be realized by JITAIs. Older adults as well as type 2 diabetes and prediabetes patients are among the most inactive and sedentary subpopulations, and therefore, are an appropriate target population for exploring these novel techniques in the research field of PA.
Objectives:
1. To showcase the feasibility of using EMA and JITAIs in vulnerable groups
2. To share the results of two EMA studies and a JITAI in vulnerable groups
3. To initiate reflection and discussion about recent EMA research and using JITAIs in the research field of PA
Summary: The first presentation will focus on the associations between individual factors and contexts of PA in older adults, but also on practical considerations for future event-based EMA studies. In the second presentation within-day associations between several determinants and subsequent PA in older adults, using time-based EMA, will be presented. The third presentation will focus on the process evaluation of a JITAI in patients with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.
Format:
5’ Introduction by chair Iris Maes
15’ Julie Delobelle: Event-based ecological momentary assessment to explore the environmental and social context of physical activity in older adults: results and lessons learned
15’ Iris Maes: Predictive within-day associations of emotions, physical complaints, intention and self-efficacy with subsequent accelerometer-assessed physical activity in older adults: a time-based EMA study
15’ Jan Novak: Implementation of a just-in-time adaptive intervention (JITAI) in patients with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes recruited in primary care: a process evaluation
25’ Discussion led by Tomas Vetrovsky
Interaction: During the discussion, the audience will be stimulated to ask questions. These will be summarized and presented by the discussant. The presenters and discussant will also prepare some questions in advance which can be used to start a discussion..
