Purpose

The aim of the symposium is to discuss the development, implementation and evaluation of school- and home-based interventions to optimize 24-hour movement behaviors in preschoolers and children.

Rationale

In 2019, the World Health Organization published guidelines for sleep, physical activity, and sedentary behavior in preschoolers and children, the so called 24-hour movement behavior guidelines. Although the evidence is limited, it is known that compliance with these guidelines contributes to the current and future health of preschoolers and children. Nevertheless, compliance with these guidelines is low in both age groups and there is a lack of evidence on effective behavior change techniques and effective theoretical frameworks for the development and implementation of interventions to optimize 24-hour movement behaviors in preschoolers and children.

Objectives

1. Identify stakeholders’ perspectives on the development of 24-hour movement behavior interventions in preschoolers and children

2. Discuss effective intervention strategies to promote 24-hour movement behavior guidelines in preschoolers and children

3. Discuss the research priorities in health promoting research focusing on 24-hour movement behavior guidelines in preschoolers and children

Summary

All presentations have a focus on both individual and combined 24-hour movement behavior guidelines. The first speaker will present the co-creation process for the development of a school- and home-based intervention to promote compliance with the 24-hour movement behavior guidelines in preschoolers with lower socio-economic backgrounds. The second speaker will talk about the implementation degree of the DAGIS intervention, compliance with the screen time guideline and changes in parents’ norms regarding children’s screen time. The last speaker will reflect on the results of a school-based intervention to promote 24-hour movement behaviors in 3-9 year old children.
