Details

The aims of the workshop:
1. To demonstrate live supervision using motivational interviewing (MI) and other communication/supervision skills,
2. To demonstrate and experience the practices and impact of a reflecting team,
3. To understand how MI spirit is expressed in the practices of this style of supervision,
4. To target strengths and professional identities using the demonstrated practices.

Structure: This workshop will be mainly experiential. Participants will be exposed to a live demonstration of supervision provided to a volunteer from the audience. Thereafter, the group will serve as reflecting team, sharing the personal associations they each had from what they heard. These ideas will be joined to re-tell the story of the supervisee with a wider perspective. The workshop will be finalized with a structured teaching session of the practices that were used. We will discuss various ways to integrate the demonstrated ideas and practices in MI work.

Rationale: Effective supervision may bridge the gap between the feeling of 'endless needs' and 'limited resources' as well as illusions of omnipotence versus impotence, limiting discursive options by drawing into either defending or abandoning position. These dynamics are often associated with high burn-out among those who counsel in the area of weight-related problems. This workshop will reflect upon the tradition of supervision and offer a comprehensive view of this process, its challenges, skills and practices when counseling those who face weight-related problems in their family, and for therapists who seek supervision with respect to their counseling. During the supervision, the supervisors will expose the “good enough” parenting’s practices employed by the therapist and hopefully, in a parallel process the therapist will use this practice with his clients. Moreover, therapist will have the opportunity to experience the impact of reflecting team and may use it as a tool in their practice - parents and friends may serve as reflecting team upon the process the client performs.
