PURPOSE This symposium addresses the latest insights in research findings on the measurement and analysis of 24-hour movement behaviors of young children (aged <5 years)
RATIONALE
A broadened focus on all 24-hour movement behaviors for improved health has been recommended, encompassing physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep. Current research on early age 24-hour movement behaviors is limited by the lack of 1) accurate measurement instruments accounting for children’s ambulatory stages; and 2) sophisticated data analysis accounting for all 24-hour movement behaviors concurrently. This symposium will present the latest findings from studies measuring and analyzing 24-hour movement behaviors in children aged <5 years. We will conclude this symposium with methodological recommendations and research priorities for future studies.
OBJECTIVES
To present the latest insights in measurement and analysis of 24-hour movement data in children aged <5 years. Specific objectives are:
─Consensus regarding terminology on physical activity in the early years;
─Development of a proxy-report application assessing 24-hour movement behaviors in 0-4-year-olds;
─The use of compositional data analysis using time-use diary data of infants;
─Methodological recommendations and agenda setting for research priorities regarding measurement and analysis of 24-hour movement behaviors in the early years.
SUMMARY
Introduction by Teatske Altenburg including the rationale and relevance of tailoring measurement tools and analysis approaches to the early years
Presentation 1 by Sanne Veldman: Physical activity in early childhood, a terminology consensus project
Presentation 2 by Jelle Arts: Involving end-users in the development of an application to assess 24-hour movement behaviors in 0-4-year-old children: My Little Moves
Presentation 3 by Valerie Carson: Compositional analyses using time-use diary data of infants at 2, 4, and 6 months
Discussion by Tony Okely including methodological recommendations and future research priorities.
FORMAT
Dr. Altenburg will provide a 5-minute introduction to the topic. This will be followed by three 10-min presentations (followed by a 5-minute discussion each), representing some of the latest research findings on definitions, measurement and analysis of 24-hour movement behaviors in young children. Based on these presentations, Prof. Okely will act as discussant for the symposium, facilitating a 25-min discussion. The symposium will be closed by formulating recommendations for future research on measurement and analysis of 24-hour movement behavior in the early years.
INTERACTION
Following a brief reflection on the three presentations, the discussant will engage the audience, the presenters and the chair throughout the discussion. The chair will monitor online questions and feed them into the discussion.
