Although low- and medium-income countries (LMIC) and high-income countries (HIC) similarly experience challenges in getting their populations physically active, cultures, contexts and conditions in these countries differ. Our international team of physical activity researchers from Mexico, the United States and Canada have been studying the relationship between physical activity and the environment for over 20 years. Through regular faculty and student exchanges, our team has had the opportunity to learn from each other. By leveraging our research partnership, we have developed and implemented approaches, tools, and protocols to better understand the physical activity environment while taking into account local cultures, conditions and contexts. This Dare2Share session will be co-led by three pairs of researchers (one senior, one junior) from each country who will share lessons-learned about physical activity environment assessment. A brief historical overview of the Physical Activity Resource Assessment instrument (PARA, ©2010; Lee et al 2005), and description of how knowledge translation can occur in a bidirectional fashion between researchers and trainees within the context of an international partnership will be presented. Our interactive session will include an opportunity to practice using the PARA which has demonstrated strong reliability and validity in research in North America. Concrete takeaways for participants include insight into building and maintaining international research collaborations, understanding local culture, and assessing the physical activity environment.
Attendees will engage in interactive discussion and training supported by visual aids and expert trainers. Attendees will then participate in a guided field assessment using the PARA to measure a nearby physical activity resource (Sankt Göransparken – a 6-minute walk from the conference venue). All will engage in a guided discussion of specific strategies that can be used to culturally adapt the PARA for use in their own communities. A debrief session will be conducted at the end.
