Details
Purpose: To present examples of patient-centred approaches for supporting healthy active lifestyles in patients living with and beyond cancer in the context of effective and sustainable health behaviour change.
Rationale: Living a healthy active lifestyle has positive health effects for individuals living with and beyond cancer. However, many patients do not comply with recommended healthy lifestyle guidelines, demonstrating a gap between evidence and practice. Patient-centred approaches are needed to successfully promote healthy active lifestyles in patients. Patient-centred strategies for supporting healthy active lifestyles are tailored to the needs and preferences of patients and aim to increase the likelihood of effective and sustainable health behaviour change.
Objectives:
1. To present examples of patient-centred strategies for supporting healthy active lifestyles in patients.
2. To discuss relevant pitfalls and challenges and to consider research priorities in the development, implementation and evaluation of patient-centred strategies.
Summary: This symposium is a collaboration between cancer researchers from England, the Netherlands and Belgium. The first presentation concentrates on a screening tool for healthcare providers, enabling them to refer patients to the most appropriate exercise setting with patient-tailored supervision. The second presentation focuses on the development of a toolkit which is specifically aimed at helping physical therapists to support exercise maintenance in oncology patients. The third presentation is centred on a co-designed intervention for supporting healthy active lifestyles (physical activity, healthy dietary choices) in patients recovering from breast cancer treatment. All included studies focus on patient-centred approaches for promoting healthy active lifestyles in oncology patients. The presenters will elaborate on the developmental process underpinning these strategies.
Format: The chair of the symposium (Vera Verbestel) will start with a short introduction of the topic, followed by three presentations:
1. To develop a screening tool for healthcare providers to refer patients living with and beyond cancer to the most appropriate exercise setting with patient tailored supervision. Presenter: Renée Bultijnck
2. STart Exercising, keeP exercisINg (STEP‐IN): A toolkit for physiotherapists to support exercise maintenance among cancer survivors after supervised exercise interventions. Presenter: Dr, Carla, Agasi-Idenburg.
3. Co-designed weight management intervention for women recovering from primary breast cancer treatment. Presenter: John Saxton
The symposium will be closed by the discussant (Cindy Forbes) with a facilitated audience discussion and a summary of the presentations and discussions.
Interaction: The remote audience will be involved by using Wooclap’s real-time interactions and message walls which allows participants to anonymously reply on polls and to ask questions.
