Details

Purpose/Objectives: The purpose of this symposium is twofold. First, our goal is to aid our global community of physical activity and nutrition researchers with an understanding of how the terms sex and gender are used in international research, and what they mean across different countries and cultures. Second, we aim to support researchers with integrating sex and gender-based analysis in their research by presenting two tools currently under development. These tools aid with measurement of gender on a continuum and with understanding intersectionality. Third, we want to invite speakers from multiple countries to provide a global context on sex and gender-based analysis. Finally, we plan on opening up a conversation with the ISBNPA attendees on where our research community needs to go next when it comes to sex and gender-based analysis.

Rationale: There is a plethora of data indicating that significant sex differences exist in chronic disease physiology, and that patterns of physical activity or diet vary by gender. However, the tools used to assess gender have either relied on patriarchal and colonial underpinnings, or integrate gender stereotypes that complicate the interpretation of the role of gender in health and health behaviour. A global context and consensus are needed when using the terms sex and gender.

Summary and Interaction: The session will begin with a presentation outlining the terms sex and gender, and providing examples of their unique effects on health and health behaviour. Gaps in our understanding of gender effects and available tools will also be addressed. The use of these terms across different countries and cultures set the stage for further discussion related to measurement. We are looking for up to 4 speakers from different countries who will be attending ISBNPA to participate in this symposium. Each speaker will provide context on sex and gender-based analysis for their country and culture. Next, two speakers will present tools they have created to help overcome the challenges associated with sex and gender-based analysis in physical activity and nutrition research. Finally, there will be a moderated discussion with the audience (pre-planned discussion questions), and time for questions.
