Purpose:
To present and discuss the development, first results, and future directions of The Prospective Physical Activity, Sitting and Sleep consortium (ProPASS).
Rationale:
The Prospective Physical Activity Sitting and Sleep consortium (ProPASS) is an international collaboration platform committed to harmonise thigh-worn accelerometry data to investigate longitudinal associations of physical activity, posture, and sleep with long-term health outcomes and longevity. More than 15 cohort studies worldwide have now joined ProPASS. In the past years, ProPASS has developed standardized accelerometer protocols and prospective harmonization methods. Methodological developments include the release of the ActiPASS software for unified processing of accelerometery data in all ProPASS cohorts. A pilot pooling project is now ongoing providing initial evidence on physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep with cardiometabolic outcomes.
Objectives:
- Provide insight into factors that are important in the planning and execution of large-scale physical behaviour measurement using accelerometers.
- Share knowledge into the methodological advancements in processing and analysing thigh-worn accelerometer data.
- Show the latest developments and results of the first ProPASS pooling project and discuss future directions of ProPASS
Summary:
Dr. Pulsford will show results of a systematic review on the use of accelerometer measurement of physical behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep) in large-scale observational studies and to examine the influence of device placement and other selected methodological factors on participant recruitment, adherence and data loss.
Dr. Johansson will present the methodological development in processing and analyzing thigh-worn accelerometer data capturing movement and posture across the 24 hours cycle, including the advancement in sleep assessment.
Dr. Blodgett will present results of the first ProPASS pooling project of 6 cohort studies examining associations between physical activity, sedentary behviour and sleep with cardiometabolic health outcomes.
Format and Interaction:
The symposium starts with a general introduction about ProPASS (5 minutes) by the chair (Dr. Koster). Each presentation will be 10 minutes followed by 5 minutes for discussion. The discussant (Dr. Ahmadi) will summarize the symposium, will discusses some of the next steps taken in ProPASS, and facilitates the general discussion with the audience (25 minutes).
