The Open Doors Awards, though limited in number, help SER expand inclusivity and participation across diverse geographies, cultures, and areas of expertise.

Forest Restoration in the Wildland-Urban Interface

Field trip attendees will hike around JCD’s forest restoration projects and learn about the successes and challenges of implementing mechanical forest thinning and noxious weed management in an effort to restore broader ecosystem function and resilience in the face of wildfires, floods, and climate change. 

Recommended for field trip:

Long pants, long-sleeved shirts, rain jacket, sturdy closed-toed shoes, broad-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, drinking water, snacks backpack. Note that cell-phone service may not be available for some portions of the day.

Fire restoration at Cal-Wood Education Center

Participants leave Denver at about 8 am and arrive at Cal-Wood at 9:30 am. They will walk on a  trail to the Lodge (1/4 mile) for a brief welcome and presentation by the Executive Director Rafael Salgado and the Natural Resources Manager, Angie Busby, while enjoying coffee/tea and  snacks.

Closed-toed hiking shoes, long pants, a sun hat, and a backpack  with a water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and a warm layer. Cal-Wood will provide work gloves.

Multi-objective Stream Restoration Through Collaboration Along the St. Vrain Creek

The field trip will travel a length of St. Vrain Creek from Lyons, CO, a small foothills community, to  Longmont, CO, a growing city of nearly 100,000 residents. 

Recommended for field trip:
Long pants, long-sleeves and layered clothing, sturdy closed-toed shoes, sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle. Transportation is provided between sites, but walking within sites will include on-trail, gravel paths as well as off-trail terrain on uneven ground. Restoration in the Clouds: A Collaborative Approach to Restoring Alpine Tundra at 13,000

This field trip will visit Summit Lake, a Denver Mountain Parks (DMP) Open Space property located at  13,000ft, below Mt Blue Sky.

Recommended clothing and gear:  

Sunglasses/Sunhat, long pants, sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes, winter jacket, hat and gloves are essential. Temperatures at 13,000 ft are 30-40 degrees cooler than in Denver, below freezing wind  chills, rain/snow/hail and intense sun exposure are possible any day of the year. Pit toilets are available in the parking lot, but no other services are available. Most of this field trip will occur between 10,000- 13,000ft  and walking ½ mile required over relatively flat terrain.

Exploring Urban Restoration in the Mile High City

Your tour guide will lead a half-day field trip, involving a bike tour, to three urban restoration projects near downtown Denver, Colorado. 

Tour Considerations:

This field trip is an e-bike tour, with the e-bikes provided. If weather prevents bikes from  being safely ridden, then alternative transportation will be provided. These sites will be accessed by paved roads and paved regional trails. There are minimal hazards for this field trip, including those associated with outdoor experiences, like sun and wind exposure, and urban experiences, like traffic. All participants need to have the physical ability to ride and  navigate a two-wheeled electronic bicycle and should be comfortable riding a bike on urban paved trails and city streets. Participants should bring water. A snack will be  provided.

Burn Scar and Low Tech Restoration Activities in the Rocky Mountains including Rocky Mountain National Park and Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest

On this trip, attendees will visit mountain riparian, wetland, and forested habitats in and around Rocky Mountain National Park and the Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest to see and learn about impacts to and restoration efforts for these mountain ecosystems, including within the burn scar from the East Troublesome Wildfire, the second largest in Colorado history. 

Recommended for the trip: sunscreen, water bottles, closed-toed footwear suitable for saturated landscapes, and plenty of layered clothes, including raingear and jackets, to adjust for variable high mountain climate conditions. Some hiking is required. The projects are at nearly 3000 m elevation and in the late fall it likely will be cool and perhaps rainy.
