2021 Wildfires: Route and Reflect

FireSmart BC has created a map in partnership with the BC Wildfire Service to provide an opportunity to reflect on the 2021 wildfire season during your route to the 2022 FireSmart BC Conference.

If you are receiving this email on a work computer and you would like to use your personal mobile device while traveling, please follow these steps:

  • Click on the map above and copy the URL, then email it to your personal email.
  • Open that email on your phone and click the link to the driving tour page.
  • Click the link within that page provided under number 2.
  • That link automatically opens Google Maps with the driving tour map.

How to Use the Map

  1. Download and/or open the Google Maps app on your mobile device.
  2. Click this link to open the map.
  3. Click “View Map Legend” for in-app directions and map symbology information (click the back arrow to exit the Legend).
  4. Search for your FireSmart BC Conference destination, select “Directions”, and enter “Your Location”. A route to the conference will appear.
  5. Clicking on any wildfire perimeter (without a route plotted) will pop up a box with information about the wildfire.
Red wildfire perimeters are 2021 BCWS Wildfires of Note, (wildfires that were especially visible or posed a threat to public safety)
Large wildfires near the FireSmart Conference in Kamloops (White Rock Lake, Lytton Creek, Tremont, Sparks Lake, Flat Lake, and McKay Creek) have additional information in the pop-up box.
  6. If you lose the wildfire points and perimeters in your map, navigate back to the link provided and re-open the map.
  7. To remove the map, close and re-open Google Maps.

Route and Reflect Information

Please drive carefully when exploring these sites.

If you venture off paved roads, please take note of any driving safety advisories and refer to the link below regarding road conditions on forest service roads.

Please review Resource Road and Forest Service Road safety information for any applicable travel.

  • Be advised, post wildfire areas can be high traffic areas with loggers and mushroom pickers and can seasonally experience washouts due to erosion. Stay alert for changing road conditions and listen to resource radios channels if driving on back roads.

  • Trees in these areas that have been heavily impacted by wildfires are less stable and can fall. Use caution when driving through areas in windy conditions.

  • It is recommended you stick to paved roads and driving is at your own risk.
